After 10 days spending on the island, I now quite know the things to do in Curacao. Even tough it is an island, you don’t have to feel bored because there are plenty things to do! I can tell, we already did a lot but not even all of it. So here is a list with 13 things you can do while you stay here. Things I have done myself and things I have to do next time. In case you are planning a trip than definitely keep on reading! Ps. A list of the best beach spots and restaurants will also follow this week!
My highlight of this trip was definitely snorkeling in Westpunt with the sea turtles (see the vlog here). It’s like an hour drive from Willemstad, but the ride will go quick because of the beautiful scenery. Than you arrive at a small beach, get ready in your snorkeling gear and search for turtles. We were lucky enough that it was fishers day, so there many turtles swimming around. Swimming beautiful and elegant like time doesn’t exist. So when you go to Curacao, this should be the first thing on your bucket list!
Did you know that Curacao is very photogenic? You have colorful houses everywhere and some buildings are more than beautiful. So inspiring and the perfect place to take photos! In Willemstad you have a street called Pietermaai, which really is the place to take your Instagram photos. All colored houses in a row, one cuter than the other. But happily it’s not the only place because pink walls and bright flowers are really everywhere!
De Pontjesbrug is a well know bridge in Willemstad. With a stunning view on both sides of the city, it’s definitely a bridge you have to take a walk on, especially in the evening when all the lights are shining. So romantic!
If you want to go around on the island, you definitely should rent a car. The island isn’t so big, but if you want to see everything you cannot do it without your own car. And it’s fun! You can stop any moment to take photos, get lost in non-touristic streets and it saves you a lot of money on tour busses and taxis!
How cool is it to have your diving license? You can dive anywhere around the world to see the most beautiful things underwater. Getting your license here is also much cheaper and faster than, for example, in The Netherlands. So if you are crazy about diving, than consider a day of getting your license!
I think there is no girl in this world who doesn’t love some pink bright flamingos, right? Also in Westpunt, you have a place called Salina di Jan Kok where you have wild flamingos. If you are lucky they stand close by so you can take awesome photos of them. Otherwise you just need a good camera ;-).
We didn’t had the chance to do it, but next time I am here I might book a trip to Klein Curacao as well. There is really not much to do on the small island – which is 10km away from East point – but the beauty of the small island must be enough to enjoy a day there. Many tour guides are offering a boat trip to Klein Curacao including a barbecue, so it is also a perfect way to get to know new people.
Whether you call them iguanas or dragons, you have them everywhere around the island. Some so big and old that they are really fascinating to see. You don’t have to be scared of them, because they think you are probably scarier. So if you see one don’t run away, but get your camera instead and capture these beautiful creatures that you don’t find anywhere else soon.
If you live in a country like the Netherlands, where the sky is more grey than blue, you should definitely enjoy your view in Curacao. Have breakfast by the sea to enjoy the most stunning and breathtaking view over the blue ocean and white sand. Or have dinner at by the beach during sunset, also worth a million!
Everywhere around the island you find juicebars (can better say -cars) and ‘Snakkies’. These are the places locals go for their fresh vitamin drink, beer or daily snack. They might not look good on the outside, but you know that the places where locals go is mostly good!
There is always something to do on the island. If you Google, you will easily find all the dates to party and have fun at night. Make sure to have a dance on the beach during happy hour at Jan Thiel beach, or find a dress up party somewhere else.
Also magnificent to see is the wild sea at Noordpunt. Close to the windmills you have a place with no tourists. Just Mother Nature playing with the sea and the rocks. Also a nice; there is enough wind there so you won’t be dying of the heath for a moment.
At last, you should relax! There is enough to do and see, but you are also on holiday so take some time for yourself. Go to the beach, get a bed and order a ice smoothie to finally read that book you want to read for so long. After all, there is probably no better place to read a book with such a stunning view as in Curacao!
