I often get compliments about my photography. Now I have to say that the people I shoot with most of the time (my mother and Rob) really know how to capture me in the right way. I love to stroll down the streets with them, searching for nice spots to shoot new content for the blog. When I look back at one of the first blog posts I ever made, the photography is far away from what it is now. Not only I, but especially my mom and Rob, really grew into shooting. We both know how the camera works, where all the buttons are for, and after making millions of photos we know which angles are the best.

But how we improved our own photography? Well, by doing it a lot. And when I say a lot I mean like really, a lot. Sometimes we shoot five outfits on a day, and that since 2011. Don’t worry, you don’t have to work on it for five years to improve your photography, because reading and seeing will help you to improve your skills and look better in your blog photos. So for today I thought it was my time to share my 5 best tips with you, just to help you out.

1. INVEST IN GOOD CAMERA GEAR AND KNOW HOW IT WORKS

You probably hear this most of the time, but really, investing in good camera gear is half the work. Since I got my Canon EOS 700D and my 50mm 1:1.8 lens (this lens is probably one of the cheapest you can find and it’s the best in the world!) two years ago I really see the difference when I shoot. Not only because the camera is fantastic, but mostly because I did a one day photography class to learn where all the buttons are for and what ISO means. If you and your shooting partner know this, you can shoot amazing pictures any time of the day!

2. KNOW YOUR ANGLES

To get to know your best angles you really have to try a lot. Most of the time you will look slimmer and taller in photos when your photographer is a little bit lower than you. Quite easy for me sometimes since I am almost 1,80m haha. Besides that, it’s good to know your good side for face shots. Yes really, we all have them – even Doutzen Kroes. If you know what your strong features are you can focus on them while shooting and you will get the most natural and flattering photos.

3. DON’T SHOOT IN THE SUN

It’s sounds obvious to go out shooting on a super sunny day, but believe me when I say these are the hardest shooting days you can get, at least if there is no shadow. Besides the fact that it’s super hard to keep your eyes open, the light will make you look pale and the quality of the image will be less. Always try to find a place where you get light from the front and sides, but with a dark sport behind you. These are the best places to shoot.

4. DON’T BE SHY

Don’t be shy in the front of the camera! I think photography is the most beautiful way of seeing someone who he or she really is. If you have the right photographer they can really catch your soul on the screen. So don’t try to hide that, but just be yourself. Smile bright, dance around and flirt – those are the things that works the best for me.

5. PLAY WITH PHOTOSHOP

Since I invested in Adobe Photoshop (which costs me around €12 per month) my photos got so much better. I can play with light when just one spot is too dark and sharpen up the details when they are blurry. When you say photoshop people often think about models who are two sizes smaller on the magazine covers than in real life, while it’s actually so much more than that. I think you never should use photoshop to make yourself look smaller or taller – just accept your beautiful self – but you should definitely use it to play with light and contrast, and okay, maybe to get rit of that pimple you have.

Such great and helpful tips! Learning how to use your camera is definitely SO important! I’m really tempted to buy proper Photoshop (or Lightroom!) but I’m still hesitating a bit. I know I’d love it though, so maybe I just have to do it haha xx

The camera and photoshop is the key! Which course did you follow to know all the camera options? I also have a Canon EOS 700D, but with a better lens. The problem is that I don’t know how to use it!
And regarding photoshop, did you follow any course? A lot of bloggers are selling like courses about pictures edition, and so on. I might buy one.

They definitely are! I got a photography course from Canon self when I bought my camera. I think they have them everywhere and really recommend doing that, especially if you have such a good lens with it as well.

For photoshop I just learned it myself by doing it and watching YouTube videos when I didn’t know what to do. A course might be faster, but I really enjoyed learning it myself 🙂
