No matter how hard you wish, it’s impossible to turn back the hands of time. Your skin that was once softer, smoother and suppler in your 20s may be showing a few signs of aging now that you’re about to hit your 40s. You may not love it, but it’s a regular occurrence—and one you shouldn’t worry about!

Aging may be inevitable, but thanks to advancements in skincare formulations, there are now plenty of products in the beauty market that can help slow down or even reverse the popular signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines, and discoloration. It doesn’t take a village to maintain the texture and health of your skin, either. So here are the must-have skincare essentials you should have in your regimen in your 40s.

As you get older, the skin will produce less collagen and natural oils that moisturize, repair and hydrate the face. Forgo chemical-laden, harsh cleansers and switch to something mild that’s enough to remove any buildup of dirt from the day.

You can also try oil cleansing. It may feel odd at first if you’re not used to this, but the results are promising. It can help restore moisture while still giving you a deep cleanse, like removing clogged pores and dead skin in a less aggressive way. Some great oils to use are castor oil, sunflower oil, and jojoba oil

During your 40s, serums will be your best friend! One of the best variants is getting one that has anti-oxidant properties. This will help your skin fight free radicals and act as a barrier from environmental pollution. Plus, products with antioxidants can also reduce the appearance of wrinkles by plumping out the skin.

You’ve probably seen the words “moisture” and “hydration” thrown around in practically every skincare regimen, regardless of what your skin type is. This isn’t any different.

Choose a moisturizer that has hyaluronic acid in it. According to Kristi Shuba, co-founder of Katherine Daniels Cosmetics, a person’s natural hyaluronic acid production cuts down in half by the age of 40. This substance can hold its weight in water a thousand times and is one of the most crucial building blocks of hydrated skin. Thank goodness you can apply it topically!

The thinnest and most sensitive part of your skin is in your under-eye area. This is the reason why you typically see the first signs of aging appear there. It could be in the form of wrinkles, fine lines, sagging, and more.

Get a heavy eye cream that treats or corrects your under-eye concerns and apply it day and night as part of your regular skincare routine. This will allow your skin to drink up the moisture and retexturize, lessening the appearance of those lines.

Sun protection is critical at any age, and more so in your 40s. Your skin is more prone to sunburn, discoloration, or hyperpigmentation at this time. Whether you’re staying in or heading out, don’t leave the house without it—even if it’s cloudy or raining outside.

Use broad-spectrum UVA and UVB sunblock with at least SPF 50 for all-around protection, like the VMV Hypoallergenics Armada Face and Body Shield or Hawaiian Tropic AntiOxidant + Sunscreen Lotion. Remember: Reapplication is just as critical. Don’t forget to touch up your sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re out and about the whole day.

Masks are a great way to deposit concentrated substances onto your skin—it’s only a perk that it’s also relaxing. While you may choose to get other types that can address particular concerns, it’s a good idea to stock up on firming masks.

During your 40s, the skin slowly starts to lose its resilience and shape. Firming masks tighten your skin while maintaining your skin’s elasticity.

For those stubborn, deep-seated dirt, exfoliation will come to your rescue. Here’s a tip: Massage your exfoliator in circular movements to stimulate blood circulation and focus on problem areas. Don’t press too hard and don’t be too hasty!

Remember to only do this step once a week and use gentle products. Over-exfoliating may strip your skin of more nutrients than needed and cause damage. You may also opt to exfoliate before applying a mask, so you don’t dry your skin out.

Love the Skin You’re In

Taking care of your skin is a lifetime commitment. Everyone has different skin types, conditions, and concerns, so always find the products that make you feel good and deliver the best results. You can always opt to consult with a dermatologist if you are wary about a product or other problems you want to ask. Keeping a good skincare routine in your 40s will help your skin age well in the years to come!
