Since I got so so so many requests for places to go in Amsterdam, I thought it was a good idea to finally share my must visits with you on this Sweet Sunday. And how to kick off a new subject better than with… FOOD! As you may know by now I am a huge food addict. I eat food, I talk food, I think food, I dream food.. Well, I think you get the point. That’s why I already discovered some nice places that I like to go here in Amsterdam, but I am far from an expert yet! Still for me there is so much to discover. Anyway, here for you today, a few of my favorite restaurants andcafe’s in Amsterdam, most of them budget proof. Hope you like it!
Cibo & Vino – Elandsgracht 89: One of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to here in Holland. When you enter the restaurant, the first thing you see is a take-away bar with all the yummy dishes they have. After taking a sit (on their mini terrace out or by their big wooden table inside) it is time to talk Italian and order your food. No just kidding, English or Dutch is fine. My tip for you, try out their Lasagne con melanzane, you ever want to eat something else after this. $
Pompa – Willemsparkweg 6: Another nice Italian where I have good memories (because it was the first place where we ate after I received the keys of my home) is Pompa. Another Italian café with a few more tables than the one I mentioned before, but still as cozy as we are used to here in Amsterdam. Definitely try out their artichoke, love it! $$
Pazzi – Eerste Looiersdwarsstraat 4 or De Clercqstraat 93: Best Dutch pizza I ever ate in my whole life. I only have been to the one on the Eerste Looiersdwarsstraat, where you have to be lucky to have a spot to sit – cause many people like it here. And well, if their isn’t a spot just do a take-away pizza because you wouldn’t regret it (especially the one with truffle..). $
La Margarita – Langebrugsteeg 6: The first Mexican I actually liked in Amsterdam is this one. I discovered them because they literally have the cutest terrace you can imagine. And if the Dutch weather isn’t that good, just take place inside and let you be served by the lovely staff. Highly recommend trying their spareribs and guacamole. You will never eat it better somewhere else. $$
Krua Thai – Staalstraat 22: For the best Thai experience here in Amsterdam you go to Krua Thai. Their staff is lovely and it is the only place I know so far that really serves traditional Thai food. The best place to go when you’re with a group cause you can try and share as many as possible. Warning: it can be a little too spicy.. haha. $$1/2
Happyhappyjoyjoy – Bilderdijkstraat 158: For a different Asian experience you go to Happyhappyjoyjoy. As the name is already saying, it’s one happy place. Another place where you must share your food to try as many dishes as possible. Definitely not leave this place without trying their Boas (pulled pork is my fav). I mean, talking about #foodporn.. Reservations here are necessary. $$$
Cannibale Royale – Handboogstraat 17 or Ruysdaelkade 149: More #foodporn at Cannibale Royale where you cannot get a table without a reservation either (maybe if you’re just lucky), but definitely a place you have to check out if you like a good hamburger. Well I mean, a really good hamburger. Like the best you’ll ever eat. Ok stop. I’m getting hungry.. $$
IJscuypje – Many places: If you can make me happy with one thing, it would be ice cream. No matter if it’s hot or cold outside, you can wake me up anytime for this treat. My favorite place to get ice-cream so far is IJscuypje, which you can find at many places around the centre. Believe me when I say that, especially when it’s hot, people can’t wait to get their ice here. Oh, and they have literally the best yogurt ice I’ve ever tried. $
van Soest Chocolaterie – Utrechtsestraat 143: If you want a little more luxurious ice-cream you have to go this van Soest. Besides their amazing selection of home-made chocolate, they also have some really yummy pure ice-cream variations. $$
Cafe van Leeuwen – Keizersgracht 711HS: When you go to this place – which is a typical ‘brown café’ as we call it here in Holland – you definitely have to get their ‘Broodje Hete Kip’ or in English words: Sandwich with spicy chicken. They’re known for it and I have to admit, it’s one of the best sandwiches I ever had. $
Hotel Droog – Staalstraat 7: A really cool place (close to where I live so come and say ‘Hi’ when you’re there) which actually isn’t a hotel. It’s a concept store with really cool stuff that change during the year. So almost like a pop-up store. Anyway, at the second floor you’ll find their restaurant where you can have super good and healthy salads and the staff there is more than friendly. Definitely make sure to walk around their Alice in Wonderland garden as well, so fun. $
Metropolitain/Café de Paris – Rokin 83: My favorite place to have breakfast. Seriously, you die. Their french toast and eggs with avocado are just the best I ever had. Really a treat to start the day with (or just have a well deserved lunch). $$
Puccini – Staalstraat 21: Probably my favorite place to lunch haha. Besides their chocolaterie which is two numbers away, you can sit down here for the best sandwich Vegetariano you ever had. Grilled vegetables, avocado, pesto and a touch of magic, hmm.. And besides that, they have a delicious assortment of pastries which you both can enjoy in- or outside, depending on the weather. $
Other places I like:
Terpentijn – Rokin 103: I have literally no idea how I can describe this restaurant, since it is a mix of the French, Asian and something else kitchen. You can start and end your day here since they have breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks. Anyway, I have been there a few times and I never had a bad meal, so just try it and trust me. You’ll be surprised. $$1/2
Palladium – Kleine-Gartmanplantsoen 7-9: One of my favorite places to have a beginning-of-the-weekend-drink. Seriously, try their Scroppino (only if your older than 18 ofc) and you never want something else haha. Besides that, it’s the perfect place to have a good burger – jeej to their chicken-avocado burger – or a nice steak while enjoy watching fancy people and good beads. $$1/2
Kapitein Zappos – Gebed Zonder End 5: Somewhere hidden in the streets of Amsterdam you’ll find Kapitein Zappos, one of the most inspiring places I have ever seen. The interior is a mix or Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Mexican and so more. The tables are all decorated with different tiling and there are flowers literally everywhere. While enjoying a good glass of wine you can actually go for any kind of food. From meat to fish, all so yummy. $$
Café Staalmeesters – Kloveniersburgwal 127-HS: Another typical ‘Brown Café’ on the corner of my favorite street in Amsterdam. While most ‘Brown Cafés’ are known for their beer and unhealthy food, Staalmeester is actually a place where you can get really good food. Again, a good place for burgers but also their saté is one of the best of Amsterdam. Of course they have many more good stuff on their menu, so for a real typical Amsterdam experience you have to give it a try. $
De Waag – Nieuwmarkt 4: I don’t know how the food here is in the evening, but I love this place for a good lunch or to have a nice cup of tea (still have to get used to coffee tho). Don’t expect a culinair dinner here, but just yummy food at a really cool location. Plus it’s easy to find since you just have to search for one big castle in the middle of Nieuwmarkt. $$
The Hoxton Hotel – Herengracht 255: I just have been here once, but the experience was so nice that I can’t forget about this one. The Hoxton is a Hotel where a lot of Amsterdam people meet. The decoration is really cool and cozy, but also their food is de-li-cious. Definitely a place you have to check out! $$$
* $ = very cheap, $$ = affordable, $$$ = a little more expensive, $$$$ = rich kids only
Thank you for the recommendations! 🙂
